I have been doing quite a bit of walking over the last month (which is completely unrelated to starting to play Pokemon Go). A side effect of this is that I have developed my grandfather’s habit of gathering black walnuts.

Initially, there really wasn’t any reason for it, I just like the way the green husks smell. And the wife makes extract from them. But it isn’t feasible to forage enough to be more than a snack. Then I realized that I could plant them on my property.

This has progressed into a hobby of foraging for seeds to plant. So far I have gathered:

  • Black walnut
  • Oak (uncertain about the exact species)
  • Hawthorne (I think)
  • Crab apple
  • Russian olive
  • Sumac

Besides providing free seeds to plant, it gives me an additional incentive to explore and to learn more about foraging and wild plants.
