7/3/2014 – 2nd of Middle Summer

  • Finished harvesting rye. Not sure why, but most of the heads have few if any seeds. Suspect either insect damage or waiting too long to harvest. Quite a lot of stink bugs on the plants and the wheat was devastated. Need to do more research.
  • Started harvesting the last of the yellow peas. The cowpeas are starting to come up. I think I will save the rest of the cowpeas for next year.
  • The chickens are eating a lot less feed. Not certain if it is from supplying scratch or being out on pasture. But they went from cleaning out both feeders each day to mostly cleaning out the feeder with feed and only half of the feeder with scratch. They don’t seem to be starving when I refill the feeder either.
