4/21/2014 – 20th of Middle Spring

  • Bought 4 bales of straw at $4 each. Could have gotten it cheaper, but I would have had to contact the seller in advance.
  • Tried to plant bean seeds in the legume patch, but the soil is too dry. Further planting will have to wait until I have mulch spread and the outside faucet fixed (it broke when the water line froze).
  • Respaced the row markers so that there are enough now. Previously I had been using 4 stakes for each row with a stake at the end of each half-row. Now I just use 2 stakes by only marking the southern most half-row.
  • Should be able to start planting the early corn now that I have finished marking the rows. The vegetable plot has had a good layer of mulch for quite a while, so the ground is much softer. I am going to presoak the seeds to give them a better chance. Probably have to do that for all of the plants if we don’t get good rain soon.
