I made my first batch of mead today. Started with bringing a gallon of water to boil and adding 4 pounds of honey (recipe called for 6). As this was cooling, I combined 1 packet of brewer’s yeast, about a teaspoon of sugar, and half a coffee cup of warm water. This was left to proof until the honey water cooled to less then 100 degrees Fahrenheit. After thoroughly mixing the yeast into the honey water, the mixture was split between two 1 gallon milk jugs. To one of the milk jugs I added about 30 raisins (recipe called for 30 raisins and one orange). A balloon with a small cut caps the milk jugs and acts as a gas lock.
